Synopsis
Part of the jury citation for Universeum, Gothenburg, recipient of the 2004 Wood Prize, reads: "The use of the material is uncompromising, pared-down and consistent, manifesting a desire to explore its outermost limit." This book is a presentation of Universeum together with the other nine nominees of the year, chosen from a total of 151 entries. The selection shows the foremost achievements of Swedish wooden architecture in the past four years, ranging from big structures like Wingardh Arkitektkontor's Universeum to the same practice's little Kvarnhuset in Vastra Karup, from White Arkitekter's Naturum, the entrance of the Fulufjallet National Park, to Tham Videgard Hansson's Villa Karlsson on the island of Tido-Lindo. Or from Kjellander & Sjoberg's student housing in Kista to Danish Bruun & Corfitsen's studio houses at the Watercolour Museum in Skarhamn. Architecture in Wood is profusely illustrated by photographer Ake Eison Lindman and with descriptions and drawings from the architects themselves. A beautiful and finely crafted work of documentation, informative and inspiring in equal measure.
